Dark Fire: A Matthew Shardlake Tudor Mystery (Matthew Shardlake Mysteries Book 2)I ve rated this at 4 stars because like the last book I had to rop my rating as I sometimes feel ideas are presented repetitivelyI o like the relationships in this book as in the last I ve enjoyed the evolution of Shardlake s relationship with Cromwell and the political intrigue of this era It "S SPURRED ME TO LOOK UP SOME OF THE "spurred me to look up some of the background in etailFinally I ve removed a further star because this mystery feels to predictable and at times the plot interruptions are a little forcedI think I enjoyed the concept of book 2 than book 1 but felt book 1 was a better read What is there to On Disgust dislikenothing It is important to read these books as they were written Dissolution the first in the series paints an excellent background to the times It makes you glad to be born in the 20th century Gripping no holds barred This book carries you back to medieval times with a shudder The story line is very believable and ends with well its up to you to read it I cannot recommend it enough I am hooked on thisetective and only wish I had started with This book takes place three years after Dissolution and Shardlake is back A Dirty Wedding Night: A Dirty Rockstar Romance Collection (Dirty, Book 2.5) doing hisay job a lawyer primarily concerned with property casesWhen he is asked to look into a seemingly simple murder case by an old friend he isn t keen but after a few inuiries he becomes convinced the accused a young woman who refuses to speak to anyone is innocentBut the evidence suggests otherwise and it seems he cannot a young woman who refuses to speak to anyone is innocentBut the evidence suggests otherwise and it seems he cannot the inevitable But out of "THE BLUE THE GIRL IS GIVEN "blue the girl is given temporary reprieve He soon finds out why Thomas Cromwell has a job for him and it was his intervention which caused the judge to pause the caseShardlake s relationship with Cromwell has always been strained and the King s minister has a lot of enemies who are closing in Against this background Shardlake has to track New Menopausal Years down the truth around rumours that someone has found the recipe for Greek Fire theeadly weapon used by the Byzantines hundreds of years before If true whoever controls it will yield enormous powerCromwell needs the Faja (Naslouchač, deadly fire to impress the King and keep his position and Shardlake has two weeks to find it But there are others who areetermined Cromwell failsThe story of his search for the ancient recipe and that of his attempt to find the truth about the murder are intertwined and Cromwell lends him an assistant Jack Barak Together they work against time on both casesThere are the expected twists and turns and an interesting cast of secondary characters including Guy Martin the octor from the first book And those characters are better rawn than in the first book as well rounded Barak is a good foil for Shardlake although very Dirty Work different they both sit a little outside society and grow to at least respect each other s skills and abilitiesTogether they have to navigate an increasinglyangerous London as Cromwell s enemies plot against him This feverish atmosphere is well Hearts Farthings drawn with both men no longer knowing who the. From the bestselling author of Winter in Madridand Dominioncomes a second riveting sixteenth century thriller featuring hunchback lawyer Matthew ShardlakeIn 1540uring the reign of Henry VIII Shardlake is asked to help a young girl accused of murder She refuses to speak in Y can trust Even old friends and allies become suspects and when people involved in The Case Begin To Die case begin to The Mount Shasta Mission die stakes rise ever higherThe tension builds nicely and the febrile atmosphere around the King and court filtersown to lesser mortals believably The case of the accused girl seems a little artificial at times a "DEVICE NECESSARY ONLY TO GIVE CROMWELL A HOLD OVER "necessary only to give Cromwell a hold over to ensure he Little Darlings does the job for him But the resolution to both cases is satisfying and thrillingIn my review of Dissolution I said that I had reservations the book I continue with the next to see how the series Greenwich developed As often happens this second book is better than the first Shardlake is growing as a character He s likeable but has a melancholy cynical side that stops him from being too perfect This is a series worth trying and I ve already added the next to my reading list I recently read Dissolution on a recommendation and really enjoyed it so ecided to buy the next one in the seriesThis is another brick of a book with nearly 600 pages split into 47 chapters I saw one of the later ones in a bookshop yesterday though and it would appear that these books get even bigger further into the seriesThe plot kicks off well with two major strands to the story which are both set out within the first few chaptersSome characters are familiar from the first book but others are new I m pleased to have read Dissolution first as it gives background but isn t completely essential and this novel could be enjoyed on its ownI had forgotten how much I enjoy reading the language that this author uses with it s pleasing combination of 16th century and modern phrases It is very easy to read and helps the plot move wellThe historic setting is a major part of the story and it is clear that This is the second of C J Sansom s novels set in the England of Henry VIII featuring hunchback lawyer Matthew Shardlake The first instalment in the series Dissolution was structurally a classic country house murder mystery Here with a rastic change of pace Sansom unexpectedly elivers a mediaeval techno thrller complete with frantic search for WMDs to prevent them from from falling into the wrong hands Bolted onto the side is a murder mystery for Shardlake to solveThe strength of these books is in Sansom s ability to spin a fast paced yarn His hero is also an engaging narrator although that is also something of a weakness Shardlake is very much like perhaps Brother Cadfael and Marcus Didius Falco a 20th21st Century liberal transported slightly unbelievably into an historical settingThe other main problem is the odd whopping great plot hole Without wanting to include any spoilers I would just ask why id the villains not Mate Me [If You May] (The Millennium Wolves, dispose of the evidence Whyid they just leave it In situ for Shardlake to findSo it s not great literature but it is very entertaining I enjoyed Dark Fire for several reasons For onrthe author has investigated the apprarance True dailylife and customs of. Sansom  7 read I bought the book in the UK last year and didn't really know anything about the author or the series. It's really a fascinating look at medieval life in a mystery context. It takes place during the Reformation in London. The main character, Shardlake, is a hunchback lawyer who is reluctantly drawn into solving the case. I found the descriptions of the various legal proceedings and courts remarkable. Shardlake is a mediev

For onr,the author has investigated the apprarance dailylife and customs of mid sixteenth century London extensivly and gives us a very realistic background to the action.
